The Divisumma 24 is an electric motor driven calculating machine with integrated print and register memory produced by the famous Italian manufacturer Olivetti, starting from 1956. The mechanism was designed by Natale Capellaro, exterior shape by Marcello Nizzoli. The Divisumma 24 was produced in 6 million units and it was the most popular model amongst the MC-24 series consiting of Divisumma, Multisumma, Elettrosumma, Tetractys calculators. The Divisumma 24 was a revolution in the automatic calculator sector and became an icon of Italian industrial design. It is part of the permanent collection of the Triennale Design Museum in Milan. (Source: Olivetti historical archive) The technological innovation and excellence of the product allowed for very profitable prices: in 1957 the Divisumma was sold for 325,000 lira, when in comparison the FIAT 500 cost 465,000 lira. For Olivetti, the machine, which remained on the market for about 15 years, proved to be a real goldmine of profitability: the gross margin, in fact, at least in the early days, approached 90%.
